Free Whiskey!

The Stage Bar at the Playhouse entertainment complex has a special event running next week from Monday 1 November though Saturday. They are giving a free bottle of 100 Pipers Whiskey to any group of three or more people between 11:15 p.m and 00:15. Mixers at regular bar prices – sounds like a good deal!

The Playhouse is Chiang Mai’s premier entertainment complex; ever so slightly camp and guaranteed to appeal to a gay crowd. The highlight is the nightly (except Sunday) live stage show “Sequins & Dance” performed by a Thai national ensemble of 30 talented performers.

Situated off Chang Puek Road behind Mecure Hotel and Tops Supermarket The Playhouse complex also includes the Stage Bar and the Kinnaree Restaurant.

The Kinnaree Restaurant

We’ve never been able to resist an excuse to post pictures of handsome Tai Yai males on this site and last weekend’s celebrations for the end of Bhuddist lent gave us just such an opportunity!

The event is a major festival in the Shan State and throughout Burma known as  known as Thadingyut in Burmese. So to honour the occasion the Bon Tong boys all headed of to Chiang Mai’s bastion of Shan culture Wat Ku Tao. The Temple and grounds were packed with festival goers and merit makers with a real party spirit.

Traditional Tai Yai entertainment at Wat Ku Tao

Proceedings included a candlelit procession escorting senior monks to open proceedings, followed by a range of entertainments on the main stage including displays of the famous Shan Peacock dance. Side stalls provided opportunities for singing, dancing and eating as well as fun stalls and many selling Shan merchandise. The background of the Shan temple drums and cymbals contributed to the mystic atmosphere of the event.

May I have a beer please?

Brotherly Love

One too many there Mr T?

Of course, in good Bhuddist tradition no alcohol is allowed in the temple, but this was the end of lent and, well let’s say all the little shops and Tai Yai restaurants in the side streets were doing a roaring trade.

And the place was packed full with the cutest selection of boys on the planet – all just having fun!

For those who are wondering what this has to do with Gay Chiang Mai please remember that a large percentage of the staff in Chiang Mai’s commercial gay bars are refugees from the Shan State. Most have a very hard life here in Thailand and we try to remember that and do what we can to raise awareness of their plight.

Saturday saw the end of an era in Chiang Mai as Darling, The Wine Pub, hosted their closing party.  As Chiang Mai’s longest running wine bar Darling will be re-opening soon in a new location.

More details here soon.

Last Friday saw SoupaSteak, one of Chiangmai’s most up and coming gay venues, host a book launch party in support of political prisoners in Burma.

No easy Road: A Burmese Political Prisoner’s story chronicles Thiha Yarzar’s nearly eighteen year journey on the long road to freedom. First as a political prisoner jailed and tortured in five different Burmese prisons, and then as a political exile in Thailand

The event, which was sold out, was attended by the books author, Paul Pickrem and Thiha himself. After plentiful refreshments and a wholesome roast pork meal, diners were treated to a talk about the book by Paul and Thiha. This was supplemented with an introduction from the Best Friend Library who were there to offer copies of the book and other publicity materials and DVDs supporting the Burmese cause. Live music from some of Tiha’s fellow prisoners rounded off the event.

To purchase the book visit the Best Friend Library shop Here you will also find other information about the struggle for peace and freedom in Burma with other material for purchase. If you would like to make a donation you can support the Best Friend Library

SoupaSteak can be found at 26/5 Huay Kaew Road. Next door to Salsa Kitchen and close by to Soho Bar and Lemon Tree Restaurant. The owners are a gay couple who previously owned the Mike’s burger bar chain in Chiang Mai and ran a very successful restaurant in Pattaya”. The proprietor Brian, is always happy to direct newbies in town to the local hotspots.

SoupaSteak offers a range of Western and Thai food with some speciality steaks as the name implies. They also have a full bar service, extensive breakfast menu and a delicious Sunday lunch.

Some good news that might be heralding a change in season is the re-opening of B-Beez Massage

B-Beez has always been one of the more respected Gay Massage venues with more attention to the massage itself than is found at some of the other “Rub and Tugs” in town. Of course, we’re sure that “Happy Ending” won’t be too elusive :)

B-Beez is located just off the Superhighway before the Rinkham intersection with Huay Kaew Road, or you can access it from the back of Hillside 4/5 Condos. They also have a fully licensed bar so why not pop in and share a beer with the very friendly staff.

Their website looks a little out of date but I’m sure they’ll amend that soon. we understand they’ve also got some new masseurs too.

The Bon Tong boys were out and about at the weekend and made a rare excursion to the Night Bazaar so we can report on a few changes that have been happening down at the apparently still not so popular Sleaze Alley

Cream Bar, now renamed Twin Peaks has been re-modelled with the large bar counter gone having been replaced with a few small tables and a pool table. Cruise Bar and DTS bar have meta-morphised into one long bar counter, which was looking a lonely place to sit in the absence of any potential drinking companions.  Jungle Juice (front Right) has also re-opened.

CU Bar seemed to be bucking the trend and doing a roaring trade with the usual antiquated denizens of the night.  There were a few punters in Secrets but otherwise things were very slow.  Apart from some playing pool in Secrets there was a distinct absence of the usual  hilltribe youngsters too. Clearly there is some way to go for Chiang Mai to crawl out of low season.

Wednesday 13th October at 8 p.m. is the time for this months quiz at the garden bar.

The categories for this month are:

* Pop music 1969
* Malaysia (country)
* Which century was….
* Current affairs
* General Knowledge
* Cuisine & techniques
* The 5 difficult questions.

For those who like to play with words there’s also a new riddle competition to add some fun.

MPLUS Thailand is an organisation dedicated to HIV/Aids prevention with the Chiang Mai gay community and among Male Sex Workers.

Sadly, there are still some HIV positive Farangs who visit sex establishments in Chiang Mai and think it’s OK to share their conditions with others. The video below, produced by MPLUS is dedicated to them and their selfish behaviour.

Contract for Love, by James Orr is a love story between an English Teacher and a Thai Male Sex Worker.

A contract for Love - Front Cover

I thought he was different.
I thought he was genuine.
I thought he was good.
Always smiling.
Gentle and kind.
Taking care and observant.
I was wrong, so wrong.

Set in Chiang Mai the book starts with an all too familiar description of the “New My Way” bar and some of it’s surrounds. A heartfelt tragedy of love, deceit, lies and more it tells the story of how one man fell in love with a male sex worker. How he was betrayed. How he was hurt. How he sought revenge……….

Apparently the boy in question is Tai Yai so should be an interesting read for all our Tai Yai fans. For more details: Contract For Love
