Archives: February 2011

We sadly report that Lucas Villiger, the original owner and driving force behind Darling Wine Bar has passed away in his native Switzerland after a period of illness. In it’s hey day Lucas and his Thai partner Daeng, made Darling quite the place to be. But, it was never the same after Daeng’s untimely passing in 2005 and the bar has seen several changes of ownership since then.

Lucas was a well known and popular participant of the Chiang Mai social scene who always had an opinion to express. A glance through back issues of the Chiang Mai Mail often shows pictures of Lucas at various events. The picture below from Chaing Mai mail is from a 2003 Christmas Party at Darling with Daeng in full Christmas costume.

Sometimes you read a story which reminds you that Chiang Mai, or the Rose of the North is not quite the Paradise you believed it was. In this case villans and bad luck seem to have struck for our friends at Thai Eyes. Apparently their house was attacked in the early morning hours, they were drugged and cameras and computer gear stolen. The story follows an all to familiar pattern when it transpires the culprits were high on Yaa Baa, or crazy medicine as Methamphetamine is known known in Thailand.

You can read the story here: Attack on Thai Eyes Thailand

We know many older Farangs who live alone in Chiang Mai and sometimes this type of incident is a wake up call for your security. Our best advice is if you value it, put it in the safe, though that didn’t seem to work for Thai Eyes, from the photos’ it looks like the safe is undamaged which points to someone knowing where to find the keys or the combination! This brings us to the second point: be very careful who you bring home with you, especially if you suspect they maybe engage in substance abuse.

This episode reminds us of the very sad demise of our friend David Crisp, who was murdered just over two years ago by three guys he brought to his home, apparently he met them from one of the bars in Chiang Mai night bazaar’s notorious Sleaze Alley. What may have seemed cute and friendly young men, who he thought he knew, appear to have changed into versions of the devil incarnate after excessive YaaBaa consumption.

The late David Crisp

After beating him over the head then slashing his throat following an apparent, discussion over domestic issues, the three guys stole his safe, other valuables and a car before going drinking in local bars.

Earlier this month a Thai court sentenced one of the perpetrators, from the Akha hill tribes, to life imprisonment. It seems his early guilty plea spared him a death sentence, whilst another of his alleged co-conspirators, also Akha, was not charged in connection with the murder and we understand has since been released from custody after a short sentence for other offences. The third alleged perpetrator, believed to be of Tai Yai origin, has never been apprehended.

See the following Press Association report for more details.

The intention of this article was not to put people off visiting Chaing Mai, but to remind you not to leave common sense at home. Compared with many other cities in the world Chiang Mai is a very safe place to live and visit. However, it is close to the border with Burma, where the Wa armies are one of the world’s biggest producers of YaaBaa. Hence the unsurprising fact that the streets of Chiang Mai are awash with both the drug and the criminal activities of suppliers and users alike.

One of the first uses of methamphetamines was in the second world war, when the German army gave it to troops before battle. Hitler is also believed to have been an addict, enough proof of its psychotic effects?

Play safe and be careful who you take home with you.

A few recent updates on the site – mainly adding links:

Chiang Mai’s go-go bars have been keeping the web designers happy with three new sites:
www.circlepubchiangmai.com
www.newmywaybar.com
www.powerboysclub.com

We’ve added a link to the Gay Button web forum.

Also, in support of our many Tai Yai or Shan friends who work in Chiang Mai’s gay venues we’ve added a new category of links regarding Burma and the Shan State. Please have a look. Many of the sites linked are charitable organisations helping and supporting Shan refugees in Thailand, they all appreciate donations if you can help.

One more for all our friends from North of the border

Many of our friends in Chiang Mai come from the Shan State in south east Burma. Here are some news updates from various Burma related sites:

Educating the Shan: Refugees without a camp S.H.A.N
The military dictatorship which has ruled Burma almost 50 years, since a coup in 1962, has been widely criticized for frequent violations of human rights, including rape, forced labor, forced relocation and land confiscation. Many Shan people have been forced to flee to Thailand because of frequent violations of their human rights by the brutal regime.

Aung San Suu Kyi’s release means little to the Shan people of Myanmar and their decades-long fight for independence S.H.A.N
“I don’t believe in Aung San Suu Kyi. She’s good for the Burmese people, perhaps, but not for the Shan.” Here, on the frontline, the Burmans are seen as an army of occupation. There can be no compromise.
“They invaded our state,” the young fighter says.

Citizen diplomacy through tourism? D.V.B. 18 February 2011
The time is ripe to develop a tourism policy that benefits the people, rather than the powers that be. Nothing is permanent – even tourism and the way we travel can change.

Shan-Danu chosen as Chief Minister of Shan State S.H.A.N
Naypyitaw may have made the right decision when they chose a man approachable for all and sundry as Shan State’s chief minister on 15 February, according to sources coming from the state capital Taunggyi.

Friday 18 February is Macha Bucha day. It is observed in Thailand on the full moon of the third lunar month and commemorates auspicious events in the Bhudda’s life ordaining monks and giving his teachings. The name Makha Bucha is derived from the Pali language where Makha means the third lunar month and Bucha is to venerate.

Thai people celebrate Macha Bucha day by visiting the temple to make merit, giving alms to monks, keeping the Five Precepts, including abstinence from alcoholic drinks and all kinds of immoral acts. In the evenings candlelit processions are held around temple too.

Macha Bucha Day is a public holiday in Thailand with all banks and government offices closed. Most bars and entertainment venues will be closed too and the sale of alcohol is prohibited.

It’s approaching the second anniversary of the last aborted gay pride march in Chiang Mai, called off in the face of demonstrations and threats of violence by the red shirts from the Rak Chiang Mai 51 group.

Apparently, there are still issues trying to organise a replacement event so instead there will be a Peace walk on February 20th to encourage peace and recognise oppression of minority groups in all it’s forms. It will also highlight violence against Lesbian, Gay, bisexual and Transgender people.

The walk will depart from the 3 Kings Monument at 3:00 p.m. and process to Kad Suan Kaew where a small rally will be held.

UPDATE – 18 February

The website Shanland.org has an update on the tentative agenda. However, this states the parade will start from Bhudda Satan so we recommend calling to check before going. Either way, the rally at the end of the parade starts around 17:30 at Kad Suan Kaew.

This year Adam’s Apple club is holding a Black Valentine Party to celebrate Valentine’s Day on 14 February 2011. Go join the fun and find your Valentine. Fun packed evening with extra special show.

Adam’s Apple has more up-coming parties:

  • Boy Night Out – 25 February
  • Welcome to Summer – 3 March
  • The last few days have seen the appearance of the latest editions of the free gay magazines in gay venues in Chiang Mai. Firstly the well established favourite “Thai Puan” followed this week by the second edition of new magazine “Out in Thailand”
Thai Puan Front Cover - February Out Front Cover - February

You can pick them up free from most gay venues in Chiang Mai. Out-in-Thailand is available in bookstores for 69 Bt

Out-in-Thailand is allegedly a re-incarnation of the recently failed “Spice Magazine” under a new business entity. At first glances it seems a definite improvement and we wish them well.

The last issue of Thai Puan had a great article on Chiang Mai focusing on gay massage place. Given the popularity of our own massage parlour listings this should be of interest to our readers.
