Archives: March 2011

The temperature has risen, the pollution is coming, school’s out for summer and everyone seems to have left town. Everywhere the same this week, lonely venue owners, propping up their own bar’s and crying in their beer ;) Not helped by Chiang Mai having been visited by some of Bangkok’s finest, doing the annual rounds to ensure the good old standards of behaviour and adherence to the law was being maintained in the provinces.

Well, not so at the old Free Guy club it seems. Now in it’s sixth year it has to rank as Chiang Mai’s most hospitable Host or Go-Go bar. Absent here is the chintzy decor, or banal sterility of the latest remodel the other host bars all seem to have undergone. Free Guy holds true to that hackneyed Thai phrase “same same” whilst still managing to be different. No Coco the clown wannabe mamasan, no lady boys, (though if Ray, the ever grinning owner doesn’t get a hair cut soon…..:) ), no gimmicks with guys’ wearing ties trying to look sophisticated, and pretend the club is anything other than a whore house! No, you won’t find any of that at Free Guy, just plenty of smiling people happy to greet you; the club has one simple message, “this is me, this is what I’ve got to offer, you want to take me home”?

So in our bored desperation with Chiang Mai we wandered along to see if there were stirrings of life here. Well, what can I say? What a pleasant surprise:

Bong Tong Boy Mr Bank Bong Tong Boy Mr Bank
Bong Tong Boy Mr Bank Bong Tong Boy Mr Bank

Yes, it seems original Bon Tong boy and everybody’s one time favourite, Mr Bank, is back in town and working at the ‘ole Free Guy looking just as good as we remembered. Apart from another gratuitous excuse to post pictures of handsome Tai Yai’s here’s one more for our patriarch Khun Note.

Bong Tong Boy Mr Bank

If you’ve never been to Free Guy here’s the run down: twenty-thirty well endowed boy next door type Tai Yai guys, show starts from around 10:45 to midnight and consists of a variety of different scenes, such as showers, wild animals, dancing with umbrellas (Sigh, yes they still have that show….) plus a few others, with the participants in different revealing constumes. All seem to end with a scantily or un-clothed guy or two strutting their stuff on stage for everyone to admire :) . In between the acts they have two or three guys doing go-go on podiums around the bar. No cover charge but single drinks are 200Bt, but they have some good deals on whiskey sets if you are with friends.

Another surprise was seeing old friend of Radchada Mr Ten there too. Queue another excuse for pictures:

Yes, Free Guy lived up to expectations – though of course nothing there is free! If you like simplicity with a smile this is where to go.

A 16 year old icon of gay life in the U.K. will debut in Thailand today. Launching in bookstores across the country is Attitude Thailand, a Thai version of the world renowned Gay lifestyle magazine. It is published by GMM inter Publishing with a cover price of 150 Bt.

Attitude Thailand First Issue front cover

In an interview with The Nation Publisher and Editor Laikram Lerdvitayaprasit said, “We had quite a few international magazines in mind, but Attitude is the strongest in content and style, and it’s a long-established brand”.

“We aim to celebrate gender diversity, not just sell a magazine to gay people”. It won’t be just self-promotional pep talks for homosexuals!.

Attitude Thailand will be based on 70% of the UK content but tailored to suit a Thai audience with appropriate adjustments for Thai cultural sensibilities.

Started in the UK in 1994, Attitude magazine is, according to their website, the undisputed heavyweight of the gay media. Teeming with style, irreverent wit and exclusive celebrity content, Attitude contains writing from the most respected gay voices from home and abroad, the coolest, cutting edge style coverage and the biggest blockbusting celebrity exclusives, which leave other magazines – gay and straight – trailing far behind.

Some of the most historic issues were Tony Blair’s only gay press interview ever (the first and only time a serving Prime Minister has talked to a gay publication), Madonna’s first interview in the world to launch her Confessions On A Dancefloor album, Heath Ledger’s only gay press interview in the UK, and Robbie William’s first big interview after leaving Take That.

Attitude has become the essential one stop read for anyone who wants an intelligent gay take on the world – but knows there is life outside of the Ghetto.

We wish Attitude Thailand every success!

We’ve now completed updating the sidebar on this site to include a couple of Gay news feeds from around the world as well as one from The Irrawaddy giving the latest news from Burma. We’ve also added a panel on the sidebar explaining about the Shan people and why we cover them on a Gay website about Chiang Mai!

But then why wouldn’t a Gay website take an interest in such beautiful young men?

Some of our Best Friends from the Shan State :)

Just reviewing the latest articles this one is particulalry damming on the current behaviour of the Junta in the Shan State: ‘Four Cuts’ Forcing Shan Villagers from Homes This is happening only a couple of hundred kilometers from Chiang Mai!

We’ve also added a new link at the top of the page and on the Sidebar for our friends at The Best Friend Visit their site to see the great work they are doing to support Burmese refugees. I’m sure they would welcome donations too.

In case anyone had forgotten how cute I am I’ve updated my photo gallery on the Radchada Cafe site. :) !

Latest updates to our site include adding several more venues to our Gay Massage Listings and updating our Google Gay Map of Chiang Mai

Handsome Chiang Mai Masseur

The massage business is expanding in Chiang Mai, which is surprising given the general lack of tourists. Though we understand many venues have their regular Thai clients to keep them busy. Our listings now show 16 Massage/spa venues; will be interesting to see how many there are in six months after the dead season.

New additions today are:

Hiso Spa
Thapae Place Hotel, Thapae Soi 3

We have made some changes to the site over the last two days including reformatting the Side-Bar to better use available space and adding news feeds from other Gay news sites. There are still some tweaks we have to finish so please bear with us. We hope you like the extra features.

It seems only five minutes ago that we made this post (Cool wind of Change) about the start of cool season. In reality it’s nearly four months ago and we’re left wondering where the time went. Sadly, the mercury is already rising fast as hot season starts to bite in Chiang Mai. Over the last 10 days the maximum temperatures have climbed steadily now peaking at around 35 °C more significantly, the last few days has seen a sharp rise in night time temperatures which have been up to 22 °C.

The abruptness of the season change is very marked here. One day it warms up, and never cools down again, simple as that, same but opposite is true for the start of cool season. Though the demarcation between the hot and rainy seasons is less defined with the later being preceded by a period of heavy and erratic thundershowers before the real rainy season sets in.

So how was cool season? Weather wise it was very pleasant and didn’t get that cold, even in the evenings the need for a jacket was rare! But what about business? Back in November we wrote: “Many business owners in Chiang Mai are desperately hoping that the changing weather will also bring about a change in their fortunes after one of the worst low seasons in recent memory”. Now talking to our many friends in the tourist sector it seems it really didn’t materialize. In general there seemed to be an increase in the number of foreigners around town, but they seemed very thrifty with their spending.

As for Gay tourists, they remained much fewer in numbers than in years past, though maybe a slight improvement on last year. The many winter migratory gay ex-pats who come for the whole season were still in evidence, but they, along with the resident ex-pats know the real costs of living here and are becoming very defensive about paying tourist prices e.g. in go-go bars.

So, as the leaves drop from the trees and the air con purrs non stop, the only time to venture outside is to water the grass; good bye cool season! At least for now the pollution levels are not too bad but rising, let’s hope 2554 turns out to be one of the better years in that respect.

Despite some skepticism that another new hardcopy “where to get laid” magazine could survive in Thailand, it seems Out-in-Thailand has made it through to it’s third edition published 1 March.

Out in Thailand March cover from http://www.out-in-thailand.com
Out in Thailand
March 2011 edition

out-in-thailand.com was apparently resurrected from the ashes of the old Spice magazine and is published by a small team of Farangs here in Chiang Mai. They claimed it was going to be new and refreshing which to some extent it has been. In our opinion it’s certainly better laid out and presented than Spice ever was. There is more breadth and depth to the articles too. This months edition includes an interview with Thai movie hero Apichatpong Weerasethakul, the start of a “101 Essential Gay Movies series” and an interview with Chiang Mai’s flamboyant, or some might say infamous, Dirk Weeber.

The next issue of Thai Puan covering March and April is out today and should be available in Gay venues in Chiang Mai within the next day or two. Make sure you pick up your free copy.

Thai Puan Issue – 41

Once again this month, Thai Puan has some fabulous coverage of Chiang Mai. Including where to go for gay Songkran, Saunas and the colourful Shan Poy Sang Long festival. We also owe them a hat tip for the nice reference to this site :) You can read their Chiang Mai article here
