Thai Puan – The Best Gay Community Magazine in Thailand has just launched the latest issue for May- June 2011. It should be available in Chiang Mai Gay bars this weekend.
Front Cover of Thai Puan Issue 42 - May-June 2011
This months issue includes Phuket Pride 2011, all the latest news from Bangkok, Pattaya, Koh Samui, and an article about great places for Gay tourists to visit outside of Chiang Mai which you can read:HERE.
Survival sex refers to a type of prostitution that goes beyond simply trying to earn a living. Throughout the world, regardless of the north/south divide, there are women and men who are forced to prostitute themselves as a matter of course: their very survival depends upon it. In this You-Tube video, Steve Sandford, a professorial journalist based in Thailand speaks to hill tribe boys who found that poverty left them with no choice but to prostitute themselves.
Around the gay bars behind Chiang Mai’s Night Bazaar, known locally as sleaze alley, young immigrants in Chiang Mai, Thailand find work in the underground sex industry which has become a magnet here for foreign pedophiles. One of the boys interviewed tells how he was coerced into the sex industry at only twelve years old (Hint:enable subtitles using CC button).
As gay people who love Chiang Mai we are always saddened to see stories like this about the city. Most of our gay friends here, tourists, ex-pats and Thais are good people who respect the laws here and find it abhorrent that a very small minority come to Thailand to exploit it’s vulnerabilities and sexually abuse young children. These few people besmirch the name of Gay people everywhere and the vast majority do not welcome them in Chiang Mai.
If you know of Peodphile activity in the city among ex-pats, please take action. The best thing you can do is to report it to one of the international organisations or NGO’s who have direct links into the appropriate Police departments, rather than simply approaching the local Police. Hearts of The Streets have run a campaign against child sex offenders in Chiang Mai and can help:
“a very small minority come to Thailand to exploit it’s vulnerabilities and sexually abuse young children”
I would fervently disagree with the notion that it is “a very small minority”. Can you trivialize the sexual exploitation a little more, please?
Besides, everyone knows that the vast majority of rape, purchasing of prostitutions, human trafficking, and other forms of sexual exploitation is in fact perpetrated by country residents/citizens, versus expats.
If we were trying to trivalise the issue we wouldn’t have written the article! With 15.9 Million tourists coming to Thailand last year the number involved in child sexual abuse is a VERY small minority of that total.
However, the point was actually in the context that it is a very small minority of gay people who abuse children, something which the rest of the gay community finds abhorrent.
We agree however, that the worst exploiters are not tourists or ex-pats at all. But that is a dangerous subject to discuss here.
Long time favourite among the sophisticated set on the Chiang Mai Gay scene, Glass Onion, has spawned a new gay friendly venue across the soi called Cosmos. This open fronted venue is very chic with a completely black decor and serving a similar drinks repertoire to the Glass Onion. A couple of the Bon Tong boys popped in to have a look last night and were impressed. The bar was full with a mixed crowd, mainly younger farangs and the staff were friendly and efficient; as well as a couple of cute guys there
The same owner has also opened a wine store called Shoppe right next door (and directly opposite Glass Onion).
Last week in Chiang Mai, at Wat Pa Pao temple, The Best Friend had a booth for the Shan Poy Sang Long festival collecting donations and selling fund raising T shirts. Altogether, they have raised more than 18,500 baht in the first 10 days of the Relief Project. Money has already been provided to organisations providing urgently needed relief on the ground.
The latest news from eastern Shan State is that there is a continued need for potable water and a serious need for roofing and shelter-building material as the thousands of people left homeless after the earthquake are still struggling to rebuild their homes.
The total fundraising goal for the Shan State Earthquake Relief Project is 45,000 baht ($1,500). They are more than 40% of the way achieving this, but still need a lot of help to make it there! Please help: Visit Shan State Earthquake Relief Project to find out how to donate or to purchase a fund raising T shirt.

Although Yokka Dok has only recently “come out” as a Gay Bar it has been in business for a year now. Last night Pui, the owner, and his charming English Boyfriend David through a party to celebrate.
Yokka Dok is the only Gay Bar inside Chiang Mai’s old city moat and is conveniently located near Thapae Gate at the end of Ratchamanka Road, opposite the moat from Loy Kroh. The bar offers a full range of drinks and cocktails as well as food. They also have a pool table and guest house accommodation is available upstairs too.
Pui and David were in fine form as the perfect hosts and also laid on some great entertainment and a buffet. The evening seemed very popular and ended up as standing room only with Yokka Dok’s staff kept very busy.

If you are wondering why many links and posts on this site relate to Burma and the Shan State the reason is simple. Many friends of Radchada Cafe come from the Shan State in South East Burma which borders Thailand, Laos and China.
Shan State is one of the most oppressed parts of Burma where atrocities committed by the Junta against the Shan people are widespread. As a result, many have fled to Thailand and try to survive here as refugees despite less than welcoming treatment by the Thai authorities. To find out more about the Shan, known as "Tai Yai" in Thai, visit some of the links above.
Probably 90% of the young men you will meet in Chiang Mai's host bars and other similar commercial gay venues come from the Shan State, as well as guys from other hill tribe minorities who are denied Thai citizenship. Although mainly straight, the Shan have had a significant effect on the gay farang scene in Chiang Mai, for this reason we try to inform our readers about the Shan people and their problems.
One organisation in Chiang Mai supporting the people of Burma is:
They run a number of operations in Chiang Mai, Mae Sot and Burma to help refugees providing welfare, support and education. Why not visit the best friend library in Chiang Mai on Nimanhemin Rd Soi 13.
The Best Friend depends entirely on voluntary contributions for all their work. You can support their projects with a monetary donation or by donating books, computers or school supplies.
