Happy New Year!

Last year’s Songkran still seems a fresh memory, but another year has flown by and a week from now Songkran 2011 will be underway. If you were planning a trip to Chiang Mai you’ve hopefully organised everything already as reports are the planes, trains and buses are already fully booked for next week!

Chiang Mai is one of Thailand’s most renowned and popular Songkran destinations, and for one week every year becomes a wet and crazy party in stark contrast to it’s normal laid back atmosphere. Revelers from all over Thailand and abroad come to experience the party around the cities moat.

If you’re wondering, Songkran is the water festival celebration of the Thai New Year. It grew from the original unassuming concept of washing the hands of family elders, into the modern mega party. Officially running from 13 – 15 April it seems the entire population is out on the streets attempting to drown each other in as much water as possible.

Water everywhere – Songkran 2010 at Soho Bar

Some are out along along the roadsides, and get their ammunition from the nearest hosepipe. Others lounge in the back of pick up trucks which maraud through the city with a large drum of water, plenty of buckets, high powered water pistols and plenty of liquid refreshments! No body is safe! Don’t imagine that wearing a suit and carrying a briefcase will protect you from a drenching. Even uniformed policemen get soaked!

So where should you go to celebrate Songkran in Chiang Mai? A great choice is Soho bar, open everyday from 12 noon with cheap beer and wine coolers during the day, lots of water and plenty of fun. After the water throwing stops, around 6 p.m. Soho offers it’s normal bar service until late! That section on Huay Kaew road is closed to traffic during the daytime festival and packed with people going to the big party stages outside Kad Suan Kaew 200m down the road.

Just up the Road from Soho, Soupasteak will be selling fast food outside the restaurant as well as cooling beer. Apart from the big party outside Kadsuan Kaew, Thapae Gate is another major area for festivities, as is all the way around the moat; with traffic at little more than walking pace for most of the day you can just follow the procession and join in.

In previous years, the area around Lucky bar, on Kotchasarn Road (near the top of Loy Kroh Road) has always been popular with the gay crowd for some moatside action. This year we also have the welcome addition of Yokka Dok, just across the moat from there, which is also open for fun.

Despite the modern party themes and activities, Songkran has it’s routes in ancient traditions and beliefs, which is still reflected in the number of cultural and traditional activities to complement the water throwing. For a list of this years activities, visit the Chiang Mai Mail

If you have any special events for Songkran please let us know, we will be happy to publicise them here and it’s free!

Following hot on the heels of last weeks Poy Sang Long celebrations at Wat Ku Tao tomorrow sees the start of festivities at Wat Pa Pao, on Manee Nopparat Road (outer road on North Side of moat) near Sriphum corner. You can find both Wat’s on our google map

The festivities include a parade starting at Thapae gate. Check out some of the great photos Frank took at last weeks event here. Hopefully there will be more to follow after tomorrow :)

I want to ask my friends to be very careful now in Chiang Mai. From reports I heard that the notorious “Sleaze Alley” at the Night Bazzar has become very dangerous with many young hill tribe boys on drugs hanging about there. “Sleaze Alley” is the small soi of run down beer bars off Thapae soi 1 behind the D2 Hotel and popular with elderly Farangs looking for young male companions. It’s renowned for being the “Cheap Charlie” hangout of Chiang Mai’s gay establishments.

Over recent weeks there have been many fight’s breaking out there and just last week a Farang was attacked and seriously injured, apparently by a Yabba crazed Akha boy. I worry it is not safe for Farang go there anymore.

Many who read this website may remember the old days when, certain “strong influences” dominated the area and exerted some control on the behavior of boys and visitors there; a few years ago these places were good fun. Now there are few customers and little money to be made, these influences have lost interest, and so it seems, have the forces of law and order. I haven’t seen for myself but hear many rumors that scenes of older Farangs behaving inappropriately with young boys are common place in the bathrooms. Most of the guys who hang around there are under the age of twenty (required by law to be drinking in that type of bar), and some are much younger! Many are hill tribe boys with no ID card, and some are long time substance abusers.

Sadly it seems, their is an increasing link between the night bazaar gangs and violent crimes committed against Farangs, only last month we reported on a recent attack at the house of a Farang living in Chiang Mai, which was allegedly committed by hill-tribe boys from Sleaze Alley. Also, we have not forgotten our dear friend David Crisp was murdered by boys whom he met there. With this latest assault on a Farang, and the general level of violence and disorder there we can only suggest to our friends that they avoid Sleaze Alley from now on.

I love Chiang Mai and don’t want to make bad comments about it. There are plenty of well run commercial gay venues in Chiang Mai which can provide great entertainment for you without running risks. Please see our gay guide for details. It is not worth putting yourself in danger to save a few baht on a cheap thrill.

Please take care.

I went to these bars regularly but things have changed. There are very few customers now and I’m not surprised to hear this. Every time I went recently there was a fight at the bar or out in the street. If I take a boy from Night BazaarI I go to short time hotel, I not want to risk them knowing where I was staying or stealing things in the hotel.

In Chiang Mai most gogo boy bars are Burmese and have a work permit only for that gogo bar. If they do something crazy complain to the management. They will get fired and may get deported so they are much safer than the street hustlers.

The latest issue of out-in-Thailand is now available in Chiang Mai’s Gay bars.

Out-in-Thailand April Cover
April Edition

The “Wet and Wild” edition, covers where to go for Songkran this year. It alos has an article about accommodation in Chiang Mai which includes a picture of Scott from Soho Bar and Guest House looking fabulous, and reviews of Lotus Hotel and PJ’s Place

They also have an article on the latest Gay Venue in the old city Yokka Dok Run by the delightful Pui, who used to work at the old Friendship bar, and assisted by his suave boyfriend, David from U.K.

The local centre for disease control today announced new measures for reducing the incidence of HIV infection in male sex workers. Within 6 months all male sex workers must undergo mandatory circumcision as studies have now shown this greatly reduces the chances of HIV transmission during sex.

All workers currently employed in go-go bars, massage parlors and similar venues must submit to the operation within the time period, and after that date any new entrants to the business must be cut before they are allowed to start working. The six month period for implementation will allow current workers to stagger the timing of the operation as it is expected they will have to refrain from work for four weeks to allow recovery.

Once the deadline has passed health inspectors will regularly visit such establishments and inspect all penises for compliance. Any found to be un-circumcised will be offered the opportunity to be cut on the spot or fined up to ten thousand baht. The on the spot circumcisions will be free but performed without anesthetic to reduce costs, and to offer an incentive to comply with the law as the on the spot solution will be considerably painful.

To maximise the benefits the guidelines suggest that as much of the foreskin as possible should be removed and recommend that the Gomco clamp be used to make the job as neat as possible.

GomCo Clamp Gomco Clamp in use

Gomco Clamp and it’s use for adult circumcision.

It is also required that the frenulem be removed and the aim is to get the scar as close to the glans as possible for maximum aesthetic effect. Boys who are already registered sex workers will be able to get the operation done at a discounted rate of 500 Bt in government hospitals. Some may opt to get it done privately using other methods, but that will be at their expense. At least one Go-Go bar in Chiang Mai is understood to be negotiating with a local hospital to get a discount rate for block bookings.

As well as the obvious HIV health benefits circumcision is know to virtually eliminate incidence of penile cancer. The new measures are expected to produce benefits for the customer too. The total removal of all the foreskin and frenulem eliminates many nerve endings and sensation meaning, the boys will take much longer to ejaculate and give better value for money. Whilst some customers are said to welcome the move, others, particularly Americans, are very disappointed as coming to Thai land and finding men with foreskins is a great treat for many who lost their’s during infancy.

Asked if making circumcision mandatory was an infringement of civil liberties a spokesman responded, “this is not something mandated for the whole population, only for male sex workers, if they want to work in the industry”. He went on, “it is our duty to do what we can to reduce the spread of HIV and this small cut has big benefits”.

We asked a couple of guys from a local massage parlour what they thought. One said, “if it reduces the risk of me becoming infected with HIV I will get it done straight away after Songkran, since it will be low season then and leave time for healing”. Another complained, “I don’t think its fair that they will make us do this, I’m sure it will be very painful, especially using the clamp”. “I know it is quicker and cheaper for the government but I will probably pay to get it done privately using the freehand method as i heard that leaves less scarring”. He went on, “it also means I will loose four weeks money whilst waiting for it to heal, though it’s not just the money but also being unable to masturbate that will be the real disadvantage”. Another friend was more pragmatic, “I have a problem with premature ejaculation and my girlfriend will be pleased if it improves that”. “But sometimes it’s an advantage when you have an ugly old, fat, farang customer if you can get it over with very quickly”, he quipped.

The new law is expected to spark an increase in the amulet trade as many boys have their foreskins encapsulated as a souvenir which is believed to promote virility.

I think this is not funny, jokes about circumcision are tasteless.
