Tomorrow, 17 May 2011 is Visakha Bucha day, falling on the full moon of the sixth Lunar month it is the most important holiday in the Buddhist calendar. This auspicious day marks the birth, enlightenment, and death of Lord Buddha. In observence of this day, Buddhists are expected to observe the following
* ‘Tam Boon’: Making merit, going to temples, listening to sermons and making donations.
* Keeping the Five Precepts of Buddhism, including abstinence from alcohol, killing animals, and all kinds of immoral acts.
* Offering food or alms to the monks.
* Practice meditation and mental displine.
In Chiang Mai tradition is for the people to walk up the mountain to What Phra Tat Doi Suthep, the famous temple on the mountain overlooking Chiang Mai. The procession starts at night time on 16th May with the aim of completing the 9Km ascent before day break. On reaching the top Buddhists walk three times around the golden Stupa containing the holy relics, before heading down the mountain. With thousands of participants it can be a crowded but fun affair.
The sale of Alcohol is prohibited from midnight on Monday 16th, until midnight on 17th, though with so many people partaking in the procession to Doi Suteph many bars and venues will already be closed or very quiet on the Monday night and certainly closed on Tuesday.
Aside from all the gay bars and venues, Chiang Mai is well catered for in terms of live music. There are many, many venues with live music of all types and ranging from the single guitar player signing folk songs too large well know bands visiting larger venues.
One of Bon Tong’s favourites is Guitar Man, situated right at the bottom end of Loi Kroh Road, near the river and not far from the Night Bazaar.
Live Music at Guitar Man
Guitar Man is popular with the ex-pat crowd as well as tourists. Every night sees different live acts playing with some occasional farang performers as well as local Thai artists and jamming sessions. They also do food including a farang selection and EXCELLENT Pizza.
Although not a Gay venue, Guitar Man is a very fun and welcoming place and quite a few gay ex-pats go there. Of course most welcoming of all is Bon Tong’s friend, the one and only Jeeb. Make up your own mind……..

Another area with lots of live music choices is Santitham with plentiful small bars and restaurants with folk songs or other live music. The Bon Tong boys recently discovered an absolute gem whilst visiting Santitham Plaza Gay bar La La, a fun venue, popular with students and a lively Karaoke. Next door to “La La” (where former Gay bar Yum Boi Boi was located) a new bar has opened called “Chaophraya” which is a reggae ska music bar with a resident band called “Super Running Ska”.
The band is a selection of lively, not to mention good looking, young guys, several of whom have studied or are studying music. They play a range of instruments including Trombone, which is played masterfully, two trumpeters and bongo drums, as well the usual guitars and drums. They also have two singers. As the name implies, they play a selection of Thai Reggae Ska, and some international covers too, accompanied by non stop energetic dancing. With up to ten people on the small stage and the venue often packed with their friends, and girlfriends (sorry – sadly they are all straight and happy that way), the atmosphere can be great.

Another venue popular with the local gay crowd is “Nae Nae” This Thai food fish restaurant is located on the Super High Way near the Wat Jed Yod intersection (Heading south from Jed Yod traffic lights it’s at the next intersection left – Tewan Road – Right on the corner) Park on the superhighway and they have a couple of bridges across the small Klong you can use to enter. “Nae Nae” is simple, local, cheap and great fun. They have live folk music, with two guys playing guitar and bongo drums every night. Fish, barbecued and steamed, is the specialty and they have very cheap draft Leo beer available. It’s advisable to go with a Thai Speaker/reader as the English version of the menu is restrictive.
Like the other places mentioned, “Nae Nae” is not specifically a gay venue, but very gay friendly and the staff are welcoming and, well just go see for yourself……..
Lastly, if you want to do it large, go to Mandalay. This large Thai, almost Gay, disco (known locally as Mandagay) has a live band every night, usually loud Thai Pop or Hip Hop. Head there around midnight at weekends and you’ll find just about every Kathoey in town dancing there.
The Shan State was hit by another quake this morning, at 4.6-magnitude it was felt in Chiang Rai Province.
Parts of the Shan State are still suffering badly from the big 6.8 Magnitude quake of 24th March reported here
There is still urgent need of help for the victims who have been left homeless, especially given the inclement weather of recent weeks. The best Friend is continuing it’s fund raising drive. Why not visit them and buy a fund raising T-Shirt.
Passage From Mandalay by Teresa Orr : The story of how a Burmese girl was saved from forced prostitution in Thailand.
Front Cover - PASSAGE FROM MANDALAY
The story is set in Chiang Mai and the main characters are gay. The story exposes lots of details about the corruption on both sides of the Burmese border and the operations of people trafficking organisations.

By “Pink in the middle” we’re not referring to some of our readers, but rather to that state of perfection for a joint of roast beef – cooked until still just a little bit pink in the middle and not overdone. The “Sunday Roast” has become a popular institution in Chiang Mai among Gay ex pats. As well as an excuse for a good feed, its a great social occasion to round of the weekend before heading home to fall asleep in front of the TV. One gay friendly venue very popular with the gay crowd is The Pub
The Pub Chiang Mai
This Chiang Mai institution has been in business for forty one years, due in no small part to having managed to really capture the atmosphere of an olde world English Pub in the center of Chiang Mai. Set well back from the road in a large garden, the Pub is very conveniently located on Huay Kaew Rd, Just west of the intersection with Nimanheminda Road, the posh end of Chiang Mai’s shopping and entertainment districts. They also have accommodation available in small bungalow units in the grounds.
Bon Tong Boys eating Sunday Lunch at the Pub
Usual choices for Sunday Lunch at the Pub are Roast Lamb or Roast Beef accompanied with roast, potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and vegetables. Sometimes, Roast Pork or Roast chicken is offered for a change, with Turkey for special holidays. In addition to the Sunday Lunch specials The Pub has it’s full regular menu of English Pub Grub including Fish and Chips, Bangers and mash, Liver and Bacon as well as a range of steaks served from Lunch time until late evening. To keep everyone happy they also have a menu of Thai food, with a good selection, so you can keep your Thai companions happy too; though we have to say Roast Lamb and Fish and Chips have both become firm favorites with the Bon Tong boys.
Enjoy eating and drinking at the Pub
Sunday Roast beef at the Pub in Chiang Mai
Although the Pub in Chiang Mai is a family run business, and not a Gay venue at all, Graeme, the boss is a great host and welcoming to everyone. Indeed, unlike some of Chiang Mai’s other Pubs in the major tourist areas, The Pub is much more of a regular locals bar with many ex-pat customers including many gays, often with an entourage of young Thai guys to add to the atmosphere.
Thai boys and Gay ex pats enjoy Sunday Lunch
Another option for a good roast and some Gay company is SoupaSteak restaurant co-located with Darling Wine Bar also on Huay Kaew Road not far from Kad Suan Kaew Shopping Mall.
SoupaSteak Restaurant
SoupaSteak offers a Sunday Lunch special which alternates between a Roast Beef or Roast Lamb dinner on successive Sundays. SoupaSteak is open from midday on Sundays and 5 p.m. the rest of the week, the kitchen closes at 10 p.m. but you can continue to enjoy a drink at the Darling Wine Bar until midnight.
The combination of SoupaSteak and Darling Wine bar in the same location brings the benefit of a cocktail bar for that pre-dinner aperitif, an excellent choice of wines as well as after dinner liqueurs.
Some handsome young men enjoy lunch at SoupaSteak
SoupaSteak is always popular with the Gay Ex-pat crowd and has plenty of regular customers as well as visitors.
SoupaSteak’s owner, Brian, is a veteran catering professional who has worked in some of the worlds top hotels, previously owned the “Mikes Burger” in Chiang Mai as well as a successful restaurant in Pattaya. He opened SoupaSteak in June 2010 together with his long term partner Pong, who is the resident chef. SoupaSteak offers a range of western food options such as steaks and other offerings from the grill, home made soups and a Thai menu. Prices are kept deliberately low so its an affordable place for Chiang Mai’s ex pat community to frequent regularly.

If you are wondering why many links and posts on this site relate to Burma and the Shan State the reason is simple. Many friends of Radchada Cafe come from the Shan State in South East Burma which borders Thailand, Laos and China.
Shan State is one of the most oppressed parts of Burma where atrocities committed by the Junta against the Shan people are widespread. As a result, many have fled to Thailand and try to survive here as refugees despite less than welcoming treatment by the Thai authorities. To find out more about the Shan, known as "Tai Yai" in Thai, visit some of the links above.
Probably 90% of the young men you will meet in Chiang Mai's host bars and other similar commercial gay venues come from the Shan State, as well as guys from other hill tribe minorities who are denied Thai citizenship. Although mainly straight, the Shan have had a significant effect on the gay farang scene in Chiang Mai, for this reason we try to inform our readers about the Shan people and their problems.
One organisation in Chiang Mai supporting the people of Burma is:
They run a number of operations in Chiang Mai, Mae Sot and Burma to help refugees providing welfare, support and education. Why not visit the best friend library in Chiang Mai on Nimanhemin Rd Soi 13.
The Best Friend depends entirely on voluntary contributions for all their work. You can support their projects with a monetary donation or by donating books, computers or school supplies.
