Archives: October 2011

We’re almost in to November, the magnificent cool season weather is with us and party time starts next week with the Loy Kratong festival which proclaims the start of the high season for tourists. First time gay visitors to Chiang Mai are often not quite sure what to expect. Their pre-conceptions of the gay scene in Thailand will likely have been set by previous visits to the decadent go-go bar scenes of Soi Twilight or Bozytown, or places like Silom’s DJ station and Babylon. Yet everything else they read about Chiang Mai informs them of an ancient city of culture, temples, and a laid back, peaceful lifestyle. So what can they expect?

This article is the first in a short series providing an introduction to gay sex in Chiang Mai; how and where to find it and what to expect. This first part will cover the non-commercial scene. Part two will cover the commercial scene host bars, Karoke and massage and part three will cover freelance hustlers.

Non Commercial sex scene

Wandering around Chiang Mai you’ll soon get the impression there are more than the average percentage of gays in the local population, especially students attending the many local colleges and universities. They’re everywhere: in the big shopping malls, coffee shops, night markets and other student hang outs all over town. What you won’t find, is the big gay scene with gay discos and clubs that are common place in the western world. Here gay people are accepted and haven’t grown up with much homophobia and prejudice. Gays go out to bars and clubs with friends, of all sexual persuasions without issue, for Thais there is little demand for gay specific venues.

Inevitably, some places are more popular with young gay Thais; top of the list is “Mandalay Bar”, a huge Thai style club with live music in the old city nicknamed Mandagay. Another is “Warm Up” on the trendy Nimandahemin Road frequented by more affluent students, there are plenty of other fun bars in this area too. Whilst crowded with local gays, for the visitor, unless from the younger generation and going with friends, your fun in these places maybe limited to watching others enjoy themselves!

Warm Up CafeMandalay Bar

These two articles Guide to night clubs in Chiang Mai and Chiang Mai Nightlife have information on some of Chiang Mai’s other nightclubs/discos though we don’t entirely agree with some of their assessments. Fabrique is not attractive for gay people, Spicy which has moved to a new location used to be popular with the late night gay crowd but recent reports say it’s becoming quite homophobic. Infinity is cool and it’s right round the corner from the fun Tawan Deang and the chic Chalerm Krung. Bubble re-opens officially tonight, this was another popular place with gays with a mixture of people having fun and hustlers, but died a death. Time will tell if the gay crowd returns. Hot Shots (upstairs from Bubble) has always remained open and retained a small gay following. Check out our Chiang Mai Gay Map to find these and other venues.

If you want to go to these, and many similar places, make some Thai friends elsewhere and get them to take you. Visiting one of the non-commercial scene gay bars such as Soho Bar, or Yokkadok and chatting with the friendly staff is one way of getting introductions.

Another great way to meet gay guys is GayRomeo.com It’s extremely popular with Thai guys in Chiang Mai so it shouldn’t take you long to hook up! If you don’t have a lap-top or internet gadget there are plenty of internet cafés all over Chiang Mai. Two notes of caution, firstly follow the Saftey Guidelines and secondly, you might avoid taking your new friend to known gay places. A lot of guys you meet online are well known around town and you could save you or him some embarrassment ;) .

A good afternoon or evening’s relaxation and some fun can be found at Chiang Mai’s two gay saunas, both accommodated in quaint old Lanna Style Teak Houses. “Club One Seven”, which is also a Guest House, enjoys a picturesque setting on the river south of the city centre. Whereas, Chiang Mai institution “House of Male” can be found behind the “Kad Suan Kaew” shopping mall. Tuesday’s “Buddy Night” at House of Male, where two get in for the price of one, is particularly popular with students.

In the next part of this series we will look at the Commercial Gay venues in Chiang Mai. Meanwhile, enjoy Chiang Mai and don’t forget to play safe. Remember the rate of HIV infection is relatively high among gay people here, some suggest especially among those who frequent Saunas, to avoid unwanted holiday souvenirs be sure to use a condom and practice safe sex!

Thanks for the comment. The correct url for our site is http://www.gayinchiangmai.com/News/ however, http://www.gayinchiangmai.com should have automatically redirected to http://www.gayinchiangmai.com/News/welcome/ It seems a recent server upgrade broke the redirect, hopefully we’ve now fixed that. Although still ten days to the main Loy Krathong festival the first of many events apparently takes place today. As it’s renowned as one of the most spectacular displays we thought we’d give it a mention so you can go take a look. The event is staged in SanSai, near Mae-jo university and involves the simultaneous release of thousands of fire lanterns or Khom Loy.

Yee Peng - Khom Loy

Khom Loy Launch at San Sai

The event in previous years has proved hugely popular with many thousands attending. You should go early (late afternoon) and be prepared to wait and queue. There area a number of Buddhist ceremonies before the launch. Our understanding is this is the main event open to everyone and is free if you just go and watch. There is a second special event on 9th November for which charges apply and is aimed at a select audience. See this website for more details:

There is chatter in the air, wherever you go: tourists have been spotted in Chiang Mai! Yes, apart from the new floor at the Garden bar and Lisu boys working at Adam’s Apple, the main topic of conversation the last few days has been the noticeable increase in the number of visitors and people out and about in bars and restaurants. After the total tourist drought that has led to rainy season this year being renamed the dead season, rather than just low season, Chiang Mai could be seeing the next dawn.

Garden Bar

Khyn Bo, Bar tender at a packed Garden bar

It’s early days yet, but it’s been great to see some fresh faces about, both old friends returning for the cool season and tourists coming to stay in the hotels. Lotus Hotel and the Garden bar have had a buzz to them that hasn’t been seen in a long while, and nearby bars such as Adam’s Apple and Free Guy have been reporting great business. Yokka Dok has also seen brisk trade; only the Night Bazaar bars at Sleaze Alley are bucking the trend and remain deserted, seemingly doomed to follow the Dodo.

Recent flooding in Chiang Mai, although already dissipated and the clean-up completed, had caused concerns the tourists would stay away. But so far it’s not looking so bad. Of course, some of the extra traffic could be people coming to Chiang Mai, rather than risking problems in Bangkok. Thailand’s biggest city has managed to escape the flooding so far, though there is still frequent torrential rain and flash floods even in the centre. Meanwhile the surrounding suburbs and provinces have not been so lucky with numerous areas under several feet of water, with severe damage to industry, agriculture and infrastructure.

Mae Fang - Chaing Mai province

Beautiful cool season weather in Chiang Mai at Mae Fang

Not so Chiang Mai; for ten days or so, the high pressure area from central China, which defines cool season, has been dominating the climate here and an initial ridge has been pushing the monsoon trough further south. Clouds are dispersing too, leaving blues skies and sunshine with pleasant temperatures. Rainy season usually ceases around mid-October followed by a warmer period with the occasional shower, until cool season fully kicks in by mid-November and typically lasts until mid-February. Temperatures in the last week have averaged 24 °C Min and 32 °C Max with minimal rainfall.

Yeepne Khom Loy

With Loy Krathong, or Yeepeng festival as it’s called in Chiang Mai, coming early this year in just three weeks (9-11 November), now is a great time to plan a trip to Chiang Mai. For gay accommodation check out our gay scene guide to Chiangmai; or see our particular suggestions below.

The favourite for many visitors is the Lotus Hotel, Chiang Mai’s first gay hotel is located close to gay areas in Chang Puek/Santitham with its own popular “Garden Bar” and Adam’s Apple Club right across the road.

Lotus Hotel - Gay Chiang Mai

The Lotus Chiang Mai's Premium gay Hotel

Founded by well known Lebanese gay entrepreneur Khun Mo more than twenty years ago, it has grown steadily into a luxury hotel. Khun Mo has used his skills as an architect and interior designer to develop a stylish, comfortable and homely hotel. All rooms are en-suite with A/C and full features. The hotel’s white exterior hides a surprise; inside the feel is that of a teak wood house, marvellously decorated in a contemporary colonial style with many antiques complementing more modern aspects. The Lotus is a full service hotel with all the expected amenities including, laundry and concierge who can arrange travel and tours.

PJ’s Place is a Boutique guest house, which combines luxury hotel standards with the friendliness of a small establishment. It’s beautiful, tranquil garden location, set in a quiet lane off Huay Kaew Road, gives an impression of not being in the city.

PJ's Place Boutique Guesthouse

The owners, long-time boyfriends Jiab and Peter, are the perfect hosts, renowned for their hospitality and service. Accommodation comprises four deluxe rooms and two suite houses all in a modern chic style that retains classic Thai influences. All rooms are en-suite, air conditioned and have facilities such as minibar, tea/coffee and in room safe, normally only expected in large hotels.

Your hosts are a perfect source of information about Chiang Mai and can arrange tours and provide every other assistance to make your stay enjoyable. Over several years PJ’s Place has built up a dedicated following of repeat visitors, which leads to only one complaint: “they’re fully booked”! Especially during high season and festivals; early booking is strongly advised.

Alternatively, located close to PJ’s is the popular Soho bar and guest house; now under new ownership since August. Santitham Guest House is another popular options near the Gay area.

Though not gay, Chiang Mai also has some truly excellent five star hotels in the night Bazzar Area where you can often get some excellent deals. Check out The Chedi, Le Meriden, Shangri-la and D2, by Thailand’s world renowned Dusit Thani hotel group. There are also several resort style hotels around the city centre too, which are great places to stay if you feel like a little pampering.

Wherever you choose to stay, now is an excellent time to visit Chiang Mai. Don’t forget to print out our Quick Guide with addresses in Thai before you go, so you can easily find your way around.

Who is that guy with the tattoo ? he works at garden bar ? I cant wait february to be at garden bar !!

It’s that time of the month again, so if you want to give your grey matter a work out, pop along to the Garden bar tonight (12th October) for the monthly quiz which starts promptly at 8 p.m.

The competition is between team/tables (each team/table will have no more than 4 persons per team/table). Each team/table will pay Baht 200 and the winning team/table will collect the lot.

This month is an extra special occasion as you get the chance to see the Garden bar’s smart new flooring around the bar.

But, this month the usual entourage of Tai Yai guys vying for your affections will likely be missing as it’s the big Shan Auk Phansa celebration at Wat Ku Tao. Before or after the quiz, why not pop along to Wat Ku Tao to see this colorful festival which runs all day until around midnight. The Wat is only a short walk from the Garden bar. See map Below:

View Wat Ku Tao in a larger map

Tommorrow’s full moon marks the day of Wan Auk Phansa วันออกพรรษา, or the end of the three month Buddhist Lent when monks retreat to their temples for the rainy season. A big celebration for all Buddhists, but for our friends from the Shan state the full moon of Thadingyut is a particularly auspicious celebration and is celebrated across the Shan State with the festival of light.

The major Shan festival in Chiang Mai is held at Wat Ku Tao in Chang Puek district, behind the Municipal Stadium (see our map here). It’s starts this afternoon (Tuesday 11th October) and runs until Thursday.

Wat Ku Tao
Wat Ku Tao

Activities include eating lots of Shan food, traditional Shan music with the constant beat of drums and cymbals, and live Shan cultural entertainment on stage. The event is packed with Shan people in traditional costumes.

Traditional Tai Yai entertainment at Wat Ku Tao

Many of the handsome Shan boys wear traditional Shan clothing for the party.

This is a fun and colourful festival and a great opportunity to go and see it and learn something about Shan culture if you haven’t before. Also, many of the guys who work in Chiang Mai’s go-go bars will be absent tonight and tomorrow as the party is more fun than work, something to consider if you were planning a trip to a bar in the next couple of days. Maybe the festival is a better bet!

Whilst Bangkok is now experiencing the worst of this year’s flooding, in Chiang Mai the floods have gone and the evening temperatures are ideal for an outdoor festival. Although there is still the chance of the odd thunder shower, things are looking good for a great party.

Yesterday saw one of the most earth shattering events to hit Chiang Mai’s Gay scene in a very long time. An event many long timers here never thought they’d get to see, even with mumblings of a gay protest movement being started to campaign about this issue, none believed such a momentous event would ever occur. By comparison, other major event’s in Chiang Mai’s gay history, such as the opening of Mandalay, the closure of Simon Cabaret, or even the homophobic attacks on Chiang Mai’s Gay Pride by the Rak Chiang Mai 51 Red shirts will all be long forgotten when this piece of proactive thinking is still being admired.

Friday 7th October 2011 is the date when local personality Mohamad, esteemed owner of the Lotus Hotel and Garden Bar, embarked on probably his most memorable piece of work since creating the Boy Scout’s show. Having recently done an impeccable job of refurbishing the stools around the Garden bar, Mohamad’s team have now set about destroying one of the bars most endearing features. No longer will visitors have to spend their first five minutes sitting at the bar, trying to eliminate that fairground ride experience, or try to keep their balance when Chippendale moves in with the killer Cheshire Cat smile and “Hello, how are you today” line. Even drunks will now be able to sit at the bar felling relatively sober (do they mean us :) ), and old sea dogs won’t feel they have to reminisce about their times going round Cape Horn.

Sheriff Mohamad

Mohamad - The only Sheriff in town

Yes, the pick axes have been swinging and the concrete pouring as work commenced to replace the old uneven sandstone block flooring, around the bar. That’s right, THAT floor, the one where it was totally impossible to ever find a location flat enough to keep your stool from wobbling like a weeble. All credit to Khun Mo, he’s not doing it by half measures, the old blocks are being replaced by elegant granite slabs which not only look great and give the bar an upmarket feel, but should last well beyond the life expectancy of most of the customers. As he said himself, “it’s expensive, but it’s worth doing the job properly”. We are now wondering how long the inspiration will last; new toilets perhaps ;) ?

Garden bar

How it was, the offending floor and bar stools

If you were an aficionado of the old rocking stools, don’t despair, the work is being done in stages so the bar can remain open. If you get down there in the next day or too you can probably get one last wobble in before the passage of progress wipes out this Gay Chiang Mai tradition for ever.

Since our last report the floods have receded quickly in Chiang Mai and life is more or less normal again. Indeed, we are starting to see an all round improvement in the weather as we head towards cool season. This week has produced a lot of sunshine and cooler night time temperatures in the very pleasant low twenties degrees C. Rain has been limited to the odd light shower.

Flood waters receded from the effected areas such as the Night bazaar and Changklan areas quite quickly and this week the clean up operation has been in full swing. See the pictures below from some of the gay venues in the effected area for what they had to cope with.

From the reports we have, all the effected gay businesses have now reopened. The worst effected, Club One Seven re-opened yesterday, although they say it will take a little longer to re activate some facilities, such as the swimming pool. Meantime, they have some great promotional offers running to get people back.

Although more rain was forecast for the last week at the end of tropical storm Nalgae, it has passed to the South and creating more problems for Bangkok whilst Chiangmai escaped. The outlook for Chiang Mai is now looking good; hopefully the worst is now over for this year and we can look forward to the fabulous weather that defines our cool season.

Unfortunately, the same is not true for Bangkok. Ayutthaya province has seen extreme flooding this week with even some of the country’s major industrial estates under water causing losses estimated at billions of Baht. With high tides set to peak in the gulf of Thailand with next week’s full moon, it seems highly probable Bangkok will be badly affected in the coming days. We understand last night also saw torrential rains and flash flooding in Pattaya.

Maybe for those visiting or living in the Bangkok area or Chon Buri/Pattaya and surrounds this is the perfect time to take a few days break from the weather calamity and come to Chiang Mai. It’s business as usual here in Chiang Mai, the only problems for visitors is flooding in the central region means all trains from Bangkok are currently suspended. The bus service is erratic, and has to make long detours due to the Asia Highway being interrupted at several points in Ayutthaya. But, plenty of seats are available on flights in the next few days; where there’s a will there’s a way :) You can shop around to get some great hotel deals too, you might even try Club One Seven!

But do spare a thought for those businesses worst affected by the floods and pop in to say hello:

Club one Seven – Guest house and Sauna
One 2 Come – Massage for men by men
Victory Massage
Blues Club – Gay Massage
His Club – Male Massage

Plenty of cute Northern Thai guys in these places are waiting to meet you, like the gang of hot young things below from One 2 Come:
