  6. David C says:

Absolutely pathetic! How the hell they think anyone will understand that lot I’ve no idea. Basically making it even more expensive and less affordable for your average Thai. Seems they’re going back on their later responses to me, contradicting the first response that they were not interested in young Thais or farang, or something similar.

Mai Soong Pee Mai Tai – Happy Shan New Year!

The Shan New year falls on the first day of the waxing moon, which this year is the 26th November. Festivities will commence at Wat Ku Tao today, 25th November and last for three days.

Shan New Year invite

in Chiang Mai the center of this years celebration is at Wat Ku Tao in the Chang Puek District located off Chotana road and at the back of the city stadium (Sanam Gila). We expect there is also some celebration at the other Shan Wat – Wat Pao Pao on the northern moat. Wat Ku Tao is named after it’s unusual stupa that looks like water melons.

As well as traditional Buddhist rites and merit making, the celebrations include a range of entertainment including a large stage show with contests, Shan cultural singing and dancing and contemporary Shan music. The wat is packed with stalls selling Shan food, traditional clothing, CDs and DVDs of Shan music, Shan books and handicrafts. Other stalls include games and entertainment.

Groups of Shan men tour the temple with traditional temple drums and cymbals providing a constant background accompaniment and atmosphere. Below are some pictures from lat years festival. For more visit the organisers website: www.taiculture.net

To set the festival in context one should understand a little about the Shan people. They come from the Shan State in the South East of Burma and refer to themselves as Tai in the Shan Language. Ethnically the Shan people are part of the Tai group which has origins spreading from Yunnan province in China. They are also known as Tai Yai (Meaning Big Tai). They Speak their own language, Shan or Tai, and have a rich culture which is quite different to Thai.

Chiang Mai and Thailand’s northern provinces bordering Burma have a large population of ethnic Shan, some indigenous, but most are refugees from the fighting in the Shan State between ethnic groups and Naypyitaw’s Burmese Army. As refugees without ID they cannot work legally in Thailand and many are exploited and forced to work in low paid manual labouring jobs to survive. Many young Shan men work in Chiang Mai’s gay bars and in some places make up as much as 90% of the staff. You can find out more about the Shan from the side bar on the right of this page which has links to many websites about the Shan or Tai people and their persecution.

If you are visiting Chiang Mai this is a bad weekend to go to a go-go or host bar as many of the staff will be off partying. Instead, head down to Wat Ku Tao and join in the celebrations and watch the colourful show. We have many Shan friends who are some of the nicest and most friendly people you will meet in Thailand. Note, alcohol is not allowed in the temple, but if you must, there will be plenty of kiosks and shops outside the temple where you can have a drink and enjoy Shan food.

In the temple there will be opportunities to donate to Shan causes – please give generously, or you can donate to the Best Friend Library

A few minor news updates for you. We’ve been busy with the new Radchada Garden Café so our time for writing news articles is a little limited.

Tonight is the monthly quiz night at Garden Bar, starts at 8p.m. prompt. Khun Mo is back from his holidays and seems to be lots of people in town now so it should be a fun night.

In Santitham Plaza, the big Thai entertainment complex popular with students, LaLa bar has been sold (now called Face Bar). Doesn’t seem particularly gay anymore. That said, the bar scene here has been very busy recently and plenty of gay students around, even though the bars are ostensibly straight. Chaophraya bar next door, with live reggae ska music is still great fun, though not at all gay.

Radchada Garden Café will have reduced opening hours over the next two days due to university graduation ceremonies. Our congratulations to Khun Mai for his degree. Opening hours: Tomorrow (Thursday 24 November) 11:30 a.m. – 2:45 P.m. Friday open late at 11:30 a.m. but close as normal at 7 p.m. or later if enough people want to drink beer :) Normal service resumed from Saturday.

Radchada Garden Café is currently adding fresh home made Pizza to the menu and the boys are trying various flavours, if you pop in over the next couple of days you may get a free taster!

In a few days Pee Mai Tai or Shan new Year will be upon us with celebrations at Wat ku Tao. A great festival, though a bad time to visit the go-go bars as the boys will be out partying. We hope to provide more details of the festivities tomorrow.

Radchada Garden Café has been open since Saturday and we have a few photos for you.

Open everyday from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Radchada Garden Café is a great place to relax in peaceful settings and enjoy a morning coffee, afternoon tea or early evening drink. There will also be food available soon making it a new option for breakfast and lunch. It’s quiet location makes you feel you are in the countryside rather than Chiang Mai city, yet it is just off the superhighway and easy to get too.

The Radchada boys are looking forward to taking care of you when you visit and hope to see you soon

its good to see new gay places in chiang mai, of course it will never be a pattaya ( and i wish never be ).
Also i remember there was a new project of a go go bar what happened to it ? I think Ian from pattaya was looking for a place i’ve heard . the name of the bar was sky or blue something like that.

Today we are pleased to announce some very exciting news. Tomorrow morning (Saturday 19th November) our friends at Radchada Café will be opening their new venture to the public for the first time from 10:00 a.m.

Radchada Logo

Radchada Garden Café is a new boutique café situated in a beautiful garden in the grounds of a true Lanna Style Teak Wood Mansion. Open every day from 10:00 a.m. to 7 p.m. for coffee teas, snacks and drinks.

Radchada Cafe

Khun Mai, owner of the new venture said, “We’ve been planning this for sometime now; it’s been an effort to get everything ready but now we are ready to go I’m really looking forward to meeting many new customers and old friends in our fantastic and somewhat unique location”. He added, “Chiang Mai has plenty of nightlife already so our objective has been to create somewhere with a relaxing atmosphere where people can come and enjoy in the daytime and early evening”. “Whether you want breakfast, lunch, or just to have a coffee and read the newspaper, or browse the internet, we want you to feel comfortable here”.

Khun Mai

Khun Mai, proprietor, Radchada garden Cafe

Radchada’s patriarch, Khun Note, commented, “it’s fantastic to see such a beautiful reincarnation of Radchada, Mai has done a great job getting this place ready and I can’t wait to see many of you again”. In true Note style he added, “If you want to bring a congratulatory gift please remember I prefer JW Black!”. We promise to make sure he shares it :)

We understand Radchada will be initially open for tea, coffee drinks and snacks but will be adding other items to the menu in the coming weeks including Pizzas, Pasta dishes, Sandwiches and Breakfast. There will also be an early evening garden cocktail hour and some other novelties too.

Although not a specifically gay venue, Radchada Garden Café and welcomes everyone except homophobes, it is very gay friendly and has several gay staff. The guys hope it will prove to be a popular place for Chiang Mai’s gay gentlemen of leisure to spend peaceful afternoons.

Radchada Garden Café is situated in the Santitham area with easy access off the superhighway and not far from many gay venues, hotels and guest houses. For more details check out the Radchada Garden Café website www.radchada-cafe.com

Commercial Gay Scene – Freelancers

This is the third and final part of our series on Gay Sex in Chiang Mai; where to find it and what to be aware of. Part 1 discussed the non-commercial gay sex scene and Part 2 covered the obvious bars and massage parlours side of the commercial scene. This part gives an overview of the more covert part of the commercial sex business – freelance hustlers.

Gay Guys in Chiang Mai

You can find gay guys all over Chiang Mai as we described in Part 1. Whilst many of these guys just want sex, often they appreciate some reward, especially when they encounter older foreigners. A few are out and out money boys, straight or gay but either way, only in it for pay. It takes a little skill and experience to spot whether your new friend is more interested in you or your wallet. As well as the bars, venues and the internet we described previously, there are places in Chiang Mai where it is easy to find freelancers.

The advantage of taking hosts “off” from bars is the bar knows who they are and you have some limited comeback if there are problems e.g. if they steal from you. In particular, many of the Shan guys working go-go have work permits linked to their bars and the bar owners are responsible for them. If they get fired they also risk deportation back to Burma. This doesn’t provide any absolute guarantees about your safety; when taking someone off from a bar, always exercise caution and practice safe sex. But, taking bar hosts is much safer than going with Chiang Mai’s many freelancers. Some of these can be dangerous and it is entirely at your own risk.

Shan Boy 1Shan Boy 2Shan Boy 3Shan Boy 4

Some of the cute Shan Hustlers that hang round the Garden bar

So where can you find Freelancers? Although not as many guys here now as in years past, the safest place is still around Adam’s Apple and the Garden Bar. The guys here are almost all from the same Shan gang and friends of the guys working in the host bars. They are monitored closely by the local coterie who run the bars, the Shan mafia and the bar owners themselves, both of whom are foreigners (bad boys get a one way ticket to Loi Tai Leng) .

The Garden Bar is run professionally and monitored by CCTV. The bar staff can give you advice about the different guys who hang around. Of course, there are still a few bad Apples (no pun intended) so always exercise caution. Be aware that most of these guys are from Burma and many have no ID. There is still one reliable regular at the garden bar, the world famous “Mr Chippendale”, Chiang Mai’s hardest working boy, who tries to earn a place in the heart and wallet of every visiting Farang! [N.B. sorry to disappoint but the nickname is not because of his body ;) ]

At greater risk are the Freelancer’s from Chiang Mai’s notorious Sleaze Alley. Whilst these bars are O.K. to visit for a drink, especially C.U. Bar which is the gayest, great caution is required with the guys here. The hustlers come from a variety of different hill tribe and other ethnic groups, including Akha, Lisu, Mussur (Lahu) and Shan. This causes frequent problems and gang fights along tribal lines are not uncommon, moreover, the gangs are protective of their own and it’s hard to know who is who, or trace people afterwards if problems do occur. Many of the guys have no ID and underage has been a recurring problem here, as has drug abuse.

CU Bar

Business has been very poor for months and the bar owners appear to be a somewhat disparate group of competitors fighting each other for survival, with evidently little interest in cleaning the place up for the common good. This is also reflected in the abysmal state of shared facilities such as the toilets!

One scam we’ve heard of is newbies being charged an “off fee” by some bars, even though the freelancer is nothing to do with the bar and they certainly won’t want to know afterwards if any problems occur (N.B. Bar staff employed by the bar are different and you can expect to be charged if they leave before they’ve finished work). Another risk is the underage “honey trap” scam, this is not un-heard of and will cost you dearly.

If you do decide to leave with any of the guys from Sleaze Alley, ask for a character reference from one of the few old sex-pat barflies who are always there (easy to spot – look for the bottle of Sangsom on the bar ;) ). Their advice is more valuable than that of the other guys or bar staff who may only tell you what they think you want to hear. We have more information in our other articles too: Travel Warning and The dangers of living in Chiang Mai

Sleaze Alley BoySleaze Alley Boy2

Freelance Hustler's at Chiang Mai's Sleaze Alley

Most dangerous of all are the freelancers who hang around on the street at Thapae Gate (inside the moat opposite Moonmunag Soi 4) or down on the riverside near the flower market. Kateoys or Lady Boys may be found around Thapae Gate and Loy Kroh road too. These are absolutely at your own risk and you are potentially setting yourself up for all sorts of trouble.

Plenty of freelancers can be found on gayromeo.com too, even though many appear to be looking for sex only, once you start chatting it will soon become apparent there is another agenda.

If you do meet strangers a few basic rules of common sense apply:

  • Don’t carry large amounts of cash, or flash cash around.
  • Don’t take expensive watches, jewellery, cameras, phones, laptops or other gadgets out with you. Make sure they are locked in your hotel safe.
  • Try to find out about your new friends reputation before going anywhere alone with them. E.g. by asking bar staff or other customers.
  • Let someone know where you are going if you go off with a stranger.
  • Chiang Mai has many “short time” hotels which are great for entertaining new friends. Prices for an hour or two will be around 100-200Bt.
  • Check the guys I.D. if he has one and BE CERTAIN he is over eighteen
  • If you stay at a hotel, have reception hold your friends ID and check with you before returning it.

Most importantly, please be aware that drug abuse is rife among male sex workers in Chiang Mai and the use of YaaBaa is endemic. YaaBaa (In Thai means Crazy Medicine) is a Class A drug also known as methamphetamine is produced in vast quantities across the border in Burma and available cheaply. The local version also includes some opiates making it addictive. It causes significant abnormal behavioural changes and removes inhibitions. Whilst this can have some sexual benefits, these are often counteracted by erectile dysfunction, another side effect. The major downside is an increased propensity for aggressive and anti-social behaviour such as theft or assault, especially if mixed with alcohol.

Shan Boy 6

The Police do conduct raids on places such as Sleaze Alley and carry out on the spot urine tests which give an instant indication of drug use. They also setup roadblocks around town and test people they are suspicious of. The usual minimum penalty for first time offence is forty five days in a Thai Jail, or several years for someone actually caught in possession of the drug.

Apart from stating the obvious – DON’T DO DRUGS – if you do intend to meet with freelancers learn to spot the signs of Yaabaa use. Typical symptoms include hyperactivity, talking incessantly or aggressively, an inability to sit still and persistent finger or foot tapping, teeth grinding and repetitive behaviour. Dilated eyes with a glazed over look are another sign. Yaabaa is an appetite suppressant so an obvious symptom of long term abuse is significant weight loss and gaunt facial features along with acne. Long term abuse can lead to psychotic effects similar to schizophrenia.

metamphetamine

The other major taboo in Chiang Mai is foreigners having sex with boys under the age of eighteen. If you get caught you will have serious problems and may be prosecuted both in Thailand, where penalties are severe, and your home country.

It is a crime for foreigners to have sex with someone under 18 in Thailand

No Sex OffendersPedophile arrest

Severe penalties await foreigners who have sex with guys under eighteen

Many of the freelancers in town are under age and often have been trafficked into prostitution. You can read more about this in our article – Survival Sex which includes a video on child sex abuse and trafficking in Chiang Mai.

For those who still think it’s OK to abuse children please watch the following Video: Journey into the child sex trade is an animation produced by HOTS. The artwork and story was produced by street children in Chiang Mai. The animation tells the harrowing story of a boy’s journey into the commercial sex trade.

Finally, remember the rate of HIV infection is especially high among freelance sex workers, particularly those without Thai ID who have little access to medical services , counselling and advice. To avoid unwanted holiday souvenirs be sure to use a condom!

We hope the articles in this series have provided useful information. If you want to express any opinion on them, or the issues raised, please leave a comment.

If you have any interest in Thailand the floods that have devastated areas around Bangkok this autumn cannot have escaped your attention. Of course, by association people then wonder about flooding in Chiang Mai. Well, we’re pleased to report it’s situation normal here with the last traces of flooding being cleared up more than a month ago. See this article: Chiang Mai – Update – the floods have gone!.

We are now enjoying some excellent cool season weather, with beautiful daytime blue skies and cool night time temperatures. Last night dipped to a very pleasant 17 degrees C and this afternoon’s high reached a wonderful 29 Degrees with a light refreshing breeze.

Suan Dok gate Chiang Mai

Stunning cool season skies over Suan Dok Gate

The noticeable collateral effects of the Bangkok floods for Chiang Mai have been a large increase in the number of people coming here and shortages of some items in the shops due to production and transport difficulties. This weeks Loy Kratong festival appeared to be one of the biggest ever with a large influx of flood refugees from Bangkok. Traffic around town has been much heavier than usual with many Bangkok registered vehicles adding to the congestion. Foreign tourist numbers have also seen a boost with seemingly many more people around and busy bars and restaurants. Indeed, in the tourist areas around Thapae gate many places have been packed to capacity.

However, the extra people have not helped the commodity supply situation which was already struggling. Don’t panic, no one is going to go hungry – the fresh food markets are all brimming with local produce and other essentials such as drinking water are produced locally and in good supply. The noticeable problems are with consumer items from Bangkok or abroad and with some store chains such as Tesco Lotus, 7-11 and Tops who have centralised distributions systems and are having difficulty re-supplying. Though locally run stores such as Rimping Supermarkets, and local shops supplied by local wholesalers still have most essentials in stock.

Singha Beer

The biggest and most shocking problem for many is a shortage of BEER. With Singha’s main brewery in Ayutthaya apparently under water the iconic bottle and well know emblem of Thailand has just about vanished. Beer in small bottles (33 cL) favoured by tourist bars, is hard to find in any brand, though large bottles, which are the staple of Thai drinkers are easier to find (except Singha).

The most readily available is Leo Beer, although from the same company as Singha Beer, we understand Leo is brewed exclusively in Khon Kean, Issan which still has clear transport links with Chiang Mai. Even then demand and panic buying mean stocks are under pressure, though most Mom and Pop stores we see around town have an ample supply.

Leo was originally introduced to compete with Chang Beer, but has carved out it’s own market niche and Boon Rawd Brewery claims that since 2009 Leo has been the number one selling beer in Thailand (from Excise department official statistics). It is highly popular with Thai consumers though maybe less well known for tourists as it has only made significant market penetration in the last few years. It has a clear crisp and light taste making it very drinkable and it seems to do inflict less morning after collateral damage than it’s rival Chang Beer. Best served the Thai way with ice here’s something new for your holiday vocabulary: “Bia Leo Kuat Yai, Sai Naam keng Krap” (Big Leo with Ice) :)

Leo beer

Apart from the beer shortage and difficulties finding some imported and processed foods, everything else here is great. The constant crackle of Loy Khratong fireworks is abating and everyone’s determined to enjoy the cool weather after the interminable rainy season. Transport links are OK, planes are operating with no problems as Suvaranabhumi airport in Bangkok is fully open and not effected by the floods, at least so far…. Both the buses and trains are running, though with some delays and diversions around Bangkok. The trains are very busy as Thai’s currently can travel very cheaply due to government intervention because of the floods.

If you haven’t booked your trip to Chiang Mai yet now is a great time to do so. And, below is just four of some very many special reasons to come here!

Shan Guys

You can tell they drink leo :)

The November issue of Attitude Thailand – the gay lifestyle and culture Magazine – is now available at new sellers throughout Thailand. Though in Chiang Mai it may be a little later due to flood related transport issues around Bangkok.

Commercial Gay Scene – Go-Go Bars, Karaoke and Massage

With high season kicking in this week in Chiang Mai, and Loy krthong only days away, this is part two of our series about where to find gay sex in Chiang Mai, and what to expect if you are a first time visitor here. This part looks at the commercial gay sex scene: Go-Go bars, Karaoke and massage. The final part will cover freelance hustlers.

So, what’s available for the horny gay visitor, with high expectations of a vibrant commercial sex scene? Chiang Mai’s four Go-Go bars, Adam’s Apple, Free Guy, New My Way and Circle Pub, are best described with the cliché “same same but different”. Though none are real Go-Go bars, but rather host bars with shows, they all have similar types of guy working there, who are almost exclusively Shan from Burma (see later), and prices are similar”. Hosts are dressed in street clothes (Jeans, T shirt) or shirt and tie style uniforms rather than skimpy underwear. The shows run for an hour or two. Quantity and quality depends on the number of customers and available guys so can vary a lot from night to night. There are no live sex shows though most include some nudity and some Lady Boy cabaret acts: typically sequined frocks and lip syncing to big diva songs.
But there are differences:

Chiang Mai Male Go-Go Bars

Adam’s Apple Club
Chiang Mai’s oldest host bar, originally conceived by Mohammad, a charismatic and worldly wise Lebanese entrepreneur, who put gay bars on the map in Chiang Mai. He is still proprietor of the gay “Lotus Hotel” across the road, with its popular “Garden Bar” and restaurant.

Entrance to Adam’s Apple

After being closed several years for a complete rebuild and makeover “Adam ’s Apple” is now owned by Todd, an outgoing American from L.A. who’s personality defines the club. It’s smart, with a modern, almost clinically clean environment and atmosphere, state of the art light and sound systems and smooth service. The show includes several cabaret routines with some of Chiangmai’s better Katoey acts, some nude go-go, with one or two boys dancing, and erotic dance sequences with nudity. It’s always been popular with tourists given its long reputation and foreigner ownership. But, Thai customers like it too, especially weekend visitors from Bangkok

Todd – The man behind Adam’s Apple

Circle Pub

For Thai customers this is Chiang Mai’s premier club and has several muscle boy staff that appeal to both the Thai Gays and Thai ladies who flock there at weekends. Although smart and clean, the décor is rather chintzy. Professionally run it has a slick show with two performances a night, but the prices are on the high side. It is possibly the least appealing bar for foreigners unless you want muscle guys.

Circle Pub

The stage at Circle Pub - glittering for show time

Free Guy
“Free guy” is the most laid back club, replacing proficient management with fun and smiles. Their biggest claim is “no ladyboys” and the show is all boy next door types, with almost every act being a more or less imaginative scenario for the participants to remove their clothes and demonstrate what they have to offer! The catwalk style stage makes sure everyone gets a great view and between acts they have three boys Go-Go dancing in sexy underwear.

Free Guy Sexy Go-go

“Free Guys’” Show now starts at 10:00 p.m. and recent reports all say it’s fun with lot’s of new bar boys.

New My Way
Re-modelled for last year’s high season, performers now descend down some stairs onto the stage, “New My Way” is always a lively place. The show is long, from about 10 p.m. to midnight, and has a variety of cabaret, erotic nude acts and dancing. The show also has a couple of new surprises. “New My Way” is quite compact which makes it always seem full and adds to a good atmosphere.

For addresses and more details of Host Bars and other venues check out our map, or visit www.radchada.com

Chiang Mai Male Karaoke Bars

Another choice which is open later than the go-go bars is Karaoke. We recommend Barocco or Relax where the drinks are at normal prices, though the drink selection is very Thai: limited to large beers or whiskey bottle/mixer sets. Both have a large selection of waiters you can “off”; they also have many gay Thai customers some of whom are keen to meet foreigners. These places don’t get busy until after midnight. You can read more about Relax – the most fun gay bar in Chaing Mai here

Bar Boys and the Shan State

One surprise for visitors to Chiang Mai, which makes the commercial sex scene stand out from places like Bangkok and Pattaya is that there are very few Thai guys working in Chiang Mai’s bars. Nearly all the bar boys are Shan refugees from nearby Burma (Myanmar), in particular from the Shan state, the South Eastern part of Burma bordering Thailand, Laos and China. If you plan to meet guys from Chiang Mai’s commercial bars it is worth taking some time to understand about Shan people, as you’ll soon find out, they are not the same as Thais, and we mean that in a good way.

Ethnically the Shan people are part of the Tai group which has origins spreading from Yunnan province in China. They are also known as Tai Yai (Meaning Big Tai). They Speak their own language, Shan, and have a rich culture which is quite different to Thai. They seem more muscular, with harder more masculine facial features when compared with the softer, sometimes almost effeminate appearance of the classic Northern Thai male.

Sexy Shan Boys

Sexy Guys from The Shan State

Part of the Golden Triangle, the Shan state was for years under the control of Opium Drug Lords, such as Khun Sa, and remains one of the most lawless and dangerous parts of Burma far from Yangon (Rangoon) and Napyidaw (the new capital). Military forces of the ruling Junta have renewed clashes with the Shan State Army and the United Wa State Army. A common tactic of the Junta is to destroy whole Shan villages killing those who can’t flee, or detaining them as forced labour. The result: a mass influx of Shan into Northern Thailand, with a steady migration to refugee camps along the border and then to Chiang Mai, the nearest urban centre, in search of work.

Their persecution doesn’t end here as they are tolerated but not welcomed or appreciated by the Thai authorities. A source of cheap labour for Chiang Mai’s virulent construction industry, many are paid only 150 Bt ($5) for a day’s hard labour, and are constant targets of Police harassment. No wonder scores of young Shan males try to make a living in Chiang Mai’s gay bars, even though most are straight and gay people are not accepted by Shan culture in the way Thai culture embraces them. Few speak any English so it’s hard to ask those you meet in the bars about their backgrounds and personal stories, many of which are quite horrific.

You can find out more about the Shan in our other articles, or by following links on our side bar to various Shan and Burma websites such as Shanland.org.

Massage for Men by Men

If host bars and Karaoke aren’t your thing an alternative is gay massage parlours, of which there is an abundance spread across town so there’s plenty of choice. See our guide for details www.radchada.com this currently lists seventeen venues that are good for a massage with the all-important Happy Ending :) .

Blue Club Gay Massage In Chiang Mai

Facilities at the Blue's Club Massage for Men in Chiang Mai

You can also check out our other articles on the male massage scene in Chiangmai here. Compared with the host bars, you will find many more gay Thai guys working in the massage places and they are very willing to please you. Local gays are quite shy about working in host bars where they may be spotted by friends and peers, whereas massage places are discreet with lower visibility.
