Makha Bucha Day

Friday 18 February is Macha Bucha day. It is observed in Thailand on the full moon of the third lunar month and commemorates auspicious events in the Bhudda’s life ordaining monks and giving his teachings. The name Makha Bucha is derived from the Pali language where Makha means the third lunar month and Bucha is to venerate.

Thai people celebrate Macha Bucha day by visiting the temple to make merit, giving alms to monks, keeping the Five Precepts, including abstinence from alcoholic drinks and all kinds of immoral acts. In the evenings candlelit processions are held around temple too.

Macha Bucha Day is a public holiday in Thailand with all banks and government offices closed. Most bars and entertainment venues will be closed too and the sale of alcohol is prohibited.
