Christmas in Chiang Mai has always been a low key affair, hardly surprising in a Buddhist country. It’s hard to get all festive especially when it falls on a week day and everyone goes to school and work as normal (it is not a public holiday in Thailand). Thai people are just gearing up for the New Year holiday, which is a big thing, when many businesses will shut down for several days.
Not that we are great supporters of a christian festival anyway, but look on the bright side, whilst all the missionary and NGO types are busy stuffing their fat faces in the name of some imaginary saviour, at least they are not up in the hills corrupting young hill tribe kids (or worse…) and spreading their poison rhetoric to an otherwise happy Buddhist population.
Of course, with so many ex-pats and tourists here for the peak of high season Christmas doesn’t go un-noticed in Chiang Mai either. Bars are usually busy and many places throw Christmas parties and other special events. So what about Gay Christmas in Chiang Mai? We have a few suggestions:

Radchada Garden Cafe will be starting Monday evening (Christmas Eve) with an early evening soiree including a free Turkey Buffet. According to Radchada’s Matriarch, khun Note, they are starting early so people can come and get in the mood before going elsewhere. As they’re closed every Tuesday he decided it was best to do something on Monday evening [N.B. No free Pizza Buffet this week]
Starting at 8 p.m. On Christmas Eve Soho Bar is giving Free Egg Nog and a prize for the best dressed Santa.
For those who want the full Chrsistmas lunch experience our reccomendations on Christmas Day are: The Pub on Huay Kaew Road As usual 2 sittings.
