Radchada Garden Cafe has told us about a new update to the menu. They are now serving Burgers, with a variety of toppings.

Burger and Fries

Their delicious freshly cooked burgers are served with french fries and extra toppings such as cheese, egg or Bacon.

Radchada Garden Café is situated in a beautiful Lanna style teak wood mansion, within tranquil surroundings and a beautiful garden in the Santitham area of Chiang Mai, close to where many gay venues are located. Open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. the menu includes Cafe favourites: Breakfasts, Light meals, pasta dishes, sandwiches, drinks and great coffee. Their big specialty is Pizza – 12″ Italian style baked to order in a sizzling hot oven. The friendly young guys who work there always provide service with a smile too.

From 5p.m until 7p.m Radchada Garden Café has it’s cocktail hours. As the sun sets this is a great place to appreciate a relaxing pre-dinner aperitif from their selection of favourite cocktails including great Martinis and Margaritas. Their extra special at the moment is Gin Tonic, whilst many Chiang Mai bars are suffering from a tonic drought, following last year’s flooding in Bangkok, Radchada Garden Café still has limited stocks available. Get along and enjoy a Gin whilst it lasts!

An interesting new venue opened in Chiang Mai in the last week. See man pub is a new seemingly gay friendly, or maybe completely gay venue close to the Nimannaheminda Road area of town.

See man pub

It’s located right on the east side of the Canal road, opposite the Phucome hotel (See our Chiang Mai Gay Map). Large Thai style venue, with stage and tables for standing around and drinking. Modern design inside and out looks very trendy. Live music and coyote boys are among the highlights. At first glance it seems to be more a Thai entertainment venue, like Mandalay etc, rather than something that would appeal to most older foreigners here, but should be fun for the young, or young at heart. We will check it out soon and report back.

Last night saw the packed opening of CU Bar and Secrets Bar which have moved to new locations outside the old Sleaze Alley. Judging by the number of people there they got off to a good start with partying going on well into the early hours.

The new location is very close by the old one in the strip of bar/restaurant units adjacent to the old alley. If coming from Loi Kroh road along Thapae soi 1 the bars are on the left at the end of the Night Bazaar parking lot. Secrets is at the end of the row with CU Bar in the middle. Checkout our map below for the precise location:

  1. San Ook says:

I missed the opening but the second night was continued to hold with customers gravitating to each of the new sites without difficulty. Pleasant to see how much has happened in such a short time. Both places are quite habitable. O at Secrets reports wifi is to be installed along with continuing touches for privacy; the space is already expanding. CU’s grand opening isn’t even until next week, but the customers are there and plans to keep the old one running are apparently scuttled as the new is clearly the draw.

Still no word on Milky Way, except that it remains open in the original space. There remain stalls in the new site. It’s hard to imagine they won’t attract establishments with similar interests. The new sites for Secrets and CU can’t be called “Sleaze Alley” by any stretch, so the days of that unfortunate name would seem to be numbered. (Again, no financial interest in these establishments… just a patron happy with the new sites.)

  2. Matt says:

I stopped going to these bars sometime ago. It’s not the bars that were the “Sleaze”, but the underage boys and the elderly men they attracted. Especially those creeps who sit there all night groping young boys in public.

A new location and paint job wont’ change anything unless the owners keep out both the kids and the pedos.

  3. admin says:

A further update is Milky Way bar has moved to the front of the old alley opposite where Secrets was. This gives it exposure to the street and is still not a bad location compared with being the only bar half way down a deserted soi.

Secrets and CU bar seem to be doing great business in the new location.

Issue 47 of Thai Puan, Thailand’s best gay community magazine published bi-monthly, is now available in Gay Bars and venues across Chiang Mai. This issue features an unusal front cover “Candlelight” by artist “Pichai Pongsasaovapark”

Thai Puan 47

We have to say a big than you to them this month for including Radchada Café’s new venture Radchada Garden Café in their article “Chiang Mai – Coffee, the new black”. Also mentioned is local coffee house Akha Ama which is developing something of a cult following among gay customers in Chiang Mai. You can check it online here: www.thaipuan.com or better still, pickup the magazine from many Chiang Mai gay venues.

Sleaze Alley at Chiang Mai’s Night Bazaar seems to be suffering a slow death, at the last count two more bars have thrown in the towel leaving only three left: CU Bar, Secrets Bar and Milky Way. Both Twin Peaks and Jungle Juice have closed up shop.

The good news, from a recent Saturday night visit, is that the bars that are left at least had some customers and people seemed to be having fun. Moreover, there was no sign of the usual young kids and street urchins hanging around. Only a selection of the more professional older guys were evident. The absence of the real crackerjacks makes for a much more relaxed and pleasant environment.

Rumour still has it that the leases are up at the end of the month and won’t be renewed. We can’t confirm this but the assumption is the place won’t be around much longer. Latest story doing the rounds is that Secrets and CU Bar already have advanced plans to move very soon to a new location close by the night bazaar. If they are able to create something a bit more upmarket and escape from the underage sleaze reputation of the current place this would be a positive move. Not least as the shared facilities at the current place, such as the toilets, have now become disgustingly decrepit (but look on the bright side, even the dirtiest of dirty old men wouldn’t engage in toilet sex there now).

If there are only a couple of bars, properly run, at this new location it could work well. A perennial problem has always been two many bars, chasing too few customers. Also, too many naive and gullible Farangs, happy to cough up cash for their “boyfriends” to open yet another bar in the empty space next door, i.e. where the last one just went bust. We’ll let you know as soon as we know more.

Another rumour to reach us is of strange things going on at the Glass Onion and Cosmos, seems there have been a few management changes coupled with a significant recruitment of new, good looking male staff. Go figure.

  1. Irving says:

Never really liked “sleaze alley” but I do miss the old Peak bars.

  2. San Ook says:

It’s a fact that Secrets and CU are moving out of the “alley” to the other side of the wall, next to the parking area for the Night Bazaar. Owners of both bars are acquaintances (no financial interest on my part) and were there today to confirm when I dropped by to take a look. There’s a lot of construction going on at a fair clip.

Secrets makes the move February 1 and is circulating a flyer to that effect.

No firm date from CU but given the looks of things it won’t be far behind. CU has a bit of time left on its lease and is planning to operate both sites until its expiry.

Not that it matters, but the “lost-leases-have to clear-out” part of the rumor does not appear to be accurate. The two establishments saw an opportunity for a change of venue without noticeable disruption to the client base and took it. Functional and manageable toilets alone would seem to be worth the relocation, even if one is inclined just to use them as toilets.

No word on the fate of the remaining establishment in the “alley”, currently called Milky Way.
